How many times have we have said, “I will do it tomorrow.”

Dare I ask how many times tomorrow never came?

Whether it be a household chore, job search, doing a CV, or making a telephone call. What about the apology, the trip to the bank, the doctor’s or relative?

Life can be busy, schedules can be pushed whilst we feel pulled between our feelings, responsibilities and priorities and before we know it, procrastination can creep in.

Procrastination:

“The action of delaying or postponing something.”

synonyms:

dithering, delaying, stalling, hesitation, humming and hawing.

“Procrastination is defined as the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. It could be further stated as a habitual/intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite its negative consequences.” -Wikipedia

Wow! Intentionally delaying something that needs to be accomplished despite knowing its negative consequences.

What are the likely consequences of putting something off? These things come to mind:

  • The opportunity expires

  • You change your mind, talk yourself out of it

  • Let other people down

  • Symptoms or situations that needs fixing are worsened

  • It can appear lazy

  • It can appear careless

  • The worst circumstance would be that tomorrow never comes at all.

We all do this at times and some things just have to be put off until tomorrow, so lets not beat ourselves up. Rather have a look at some of the things that we may be having difficulty with.

Here are some things I think would be common examples:

  • Not letting go of something that you or someone else did, said, or didn't do

  • Making positive changes in your eating habits, exercise and general health

  • Making a change with finances, starting to save or cutting back

  • Telling someone the truth or giving someone an answer

  • Household chores, organising the home, decluttering etc

  • Asking for something you would like, applying for something such as a promotion or to be involved in an opportunity, relationships etc

  • Booking something, ordering something for a business idea or booking yourself onto a course for your learning

  • Going along to church, asking questions, reading The Bible and accepting Jesus as Lord

Let’s break those things down:

  • Forgiving others and ourselves. Being free from guilt or holding a grudge

  • Physical and Mental health and wellbeing

  • Lack of motivation, Laziness

  • Finances

  • Fear and anxiety

  • Relationships

  • Being organised/having a clutter free home or space

  • Confidence

  • Investing in the future, your education, having faith

  • Salvation- becoming a christian and having a relationship with God

I believe that each of those things plays a big part in our lives.

I know that we all go through situations that can cause all sorts of hurts and fears.

I personally battled for years with feeling guilty. I couldn't forgive myself for a long time for things I had said and done. Myself and others abused my body and I suffered with an emotionally unstable personalty disorder and suicidal thoughts. My medications included an antidepressant and an antipsychotic. I experienced asthma and continued to smoke 20-30 cigarettes a day despite being very short of breath and requiring my inhalers often. I couldn't be bothered with anything when I was depressed and had a complete lack of motivation for making changes in my finances or relationships. I had a deeply insecure mindset that caused me to doubt and be fearful. I would imagine the worst possible outcome and assume that to be the most probable thing to happen. I walked out of school with 4 GCSE’s, quit hairdressing, quit re-doing my GCSE’s and pulled out of many other courses. I often felt there was no point bothering as it probably wouldn't work out anyway and I considered myself an atheist with no interest in knowing God.

As I've mentioned in previous blogs, I became a christian In October 2014. Through God I received forgiveness and healing in my heart, mind and body. I stopped self-harming, quit smoking and was medication-free, being discharged from the mental health team in 2015. I am peaceful, happy and have a sound mind! I changed job roles, got a pay rise, have great opportunities, relationships and now have a good daily routine. I feel incredible joy knowing God’s promises for my life and I wake up knowing I am loved by Him, accepted by Him and that I have a plan and purpose that I can achieve through Him. That has given me great confidence in stepping out in faith, asking and getting, trusting and seeing. I can safely say that people who know me now would describe me as being a very positive person! That is a huge contrast to how I was 4 years ago.

I believe that the most important thing I have done is receive Christ into my life. Having Jesus as my Father, my Best Friend, Counselor, Motivator and Teacher has radically transformed me and continues to help me every day. Reading His Word (The Bible) and attending a healthy, Bible-believing church gives me wisdom and understanding to be able to overcome obstacles in life.

I want you to know that God is no respecter of persons. I also want you to know that God loves you with an unconditional love. His plan for you is to be happy, healthy, free from sin and sickness peaceful, successful and to have eternal life with Him.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

He can help you with every single issue you have in your life. He can pull you out of the deepest and darkest of pits. He can soften and heal the most hardest of broken of hearts. He can transform the most difficult situation and work everything together for your good. If you struggle with a lack of motivation, poor self esteem, depression, anxiety, OCD, fear or anything that prohibits you from having a healthy, happy and peaceful life then rest assured that God can and will help. Not only will He help in the bad times, but sustain and improve you. You simply have to let Him and trust Him.

“For I hold you by your right hand-I, the LORD your God. And I say to you, Don't be afraid. I am here to help you”

I encourage you today to give Him all of your worries, your problems, your fears and faults. He has a wonderful plan for you. No more procrastination. Today is the day of your salvation.

For God says, "At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you." Indeed, the "right time" is now. Today is the day of salvation.
